Babies are Amazing!  Let Me Count the Blessings that are the Little Ones!

You already know that most of a baby’s day centers on his sleeping, relieving himself and his feeding habits. Has someone taught you why a baby’s body moves the way it does? Do you understand how babies develop? Most people don’t concern themselves with the smaller details of a baby’s growth. Still others find the road from infancy to adulthood a mesmerizing one and learn everything they can about babies and their development.

Babies are always changing and surprising you! Only half of the things you have learned about babies is correct. You will probably learn at least a few new things when you read this article.A baby’s skull is not fused together when it is born. The non-fused skull is one of the reasons that so many adults are afraid to hold newborn children. This is why that space on the back of a newborn’s head is called the soft spot and you need to handle it with care or you could do some serious damage to your baby. About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won’t have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. The front of the skull is another story-those plates can take a year and a half to calcify and harden, so don’t stop being careful!

Most babies have the ability to recognize different types of music before they are born. By the time a woman is thirty four weeks into her pregnancy the unborn baby can identify different sounding songs. This is about six weeks before the baby is due to be born! Sometimes the babies will even “dance” to different beats. So music appreciation really does happen “even before you were born”! Doesn’t that astound you?Common knowledge states that babies don’t smile until long after they are born. If a baby does smile before a certain point, most people think it is gas. For a long time it was common thought that smiling was a learned behavior-something that the baby learned from his or her parents over the first few weeks of life. It was widely believed that it was easier for a baby to learn how to express unhappiness than it was to learn how to express happiness. These theories have been mostly disproved. Smiling has been picked up by newer ultrasound machines, proving the old theories are wrong. Now families are given ultrasound pictures of their smiling children many weeks before the children’s’ due date. Some scientists now believe that the reason babies take so long to “learn” to smile is because the birthing process is so traumatic for them.Babies are really interesting little people. A babies learning process is largely uncharted territory-nobody truly understands it. There is nothing like watching a baby grow from an infant into an adult-it is a fascinating and mind boggling process!

Another mind boggling fact to me is the genetics of a child.  It's simply amazing to see how an egg and a sperm (two such small things) can come together and create a little tiny human.  But what happens when there is a question or dispute of who the father is?  Luckily there is a way to settle any disputes.  Paternity testing is available to anyone with a modest amount of money.  And with the advancements of the technology collecting a paternity testing sample is easier than ever.

Babies are God's gift to us.  They are precious and we should cherish every wonderful moment of them.
